archaeological findings from the iron age and viking era gets systematically destroyed
Coins, ritual amulets, wristbands, weights, rings, knives etc. get thrown into metal recycling bin says whistle blower Johan Runer, archaeologist at Stockholms Länsmuseum
The reason, he says, is that when areas are excavated to be cleared for construction, limited resources are allocated to process a certain amount of objects. If more are found, they not stored or sold to the public, but are recycled as scrap metal[/quote]
There's no explanation as to why the objects can't just be put in a marked box and stored away like what used to be common practice. It isn't clear why they're not sold as souvenirs to the public (that can restore them at home as a hobby) either. It is claimed the motive is to 'not create a market' for cultural artefacts. My guess is it's simply due to a complete lack of regard for Swedish cultural heritage and a complete lack of respect. Entire organizations now care so little for thousands of years of Swedish art and heritage that they rather just toss ancient artefacts in the trash than let the general public preserve them.
Pic is an artefact from Birka (~800ad) that Johan Runer claims would 'likely be recycled' if it was found today.
