Top 10 Generals
I listened to Wrath of the Khans a while back and thought about how Dan mentions the fantastic leadership of the Mongol armies, and how they had two or three of his top 10 generals in history, which prompts me to ask: what are you all's top 10 (and why)?

Poultry is a paltry response.

No idea, weapons are different, the soldiers are different, communication also is. You just cannot compare someone from 500 BC to Rommel.katarn wrote:I listened to Wrath of the Khans a while back and thought about how Dan mentions the fantastic leadership of the Mongol armies, and how they had two or three of his top 10 generals in history, which prompts me to ask: what are you all's top 10 (and why)?

General Tso was indeed a great man. Easily top ten material.

Re: Top 10 Generals
Top 10 of all time gives always a bit boring list, because those very famous ones are in the end there for a reason, they were good and for a reason.
Here's three that came to mind. Which might in the end be boring, but well, that was the question...
Napoleon:
Has to be in top 10. If an era of warfare is named after you then yes, you make it to the top 10. Not many generals have such a Mausoleum as the final restingplace, btw.

Heinz Guderian:
Not only one of the innovators of new technology put into use with old ideas, but also a competent field commander. And then the inspector general of the Panzer troops. Achtung Panzer! is a great read, btw. Not fancy writing, directly to the point advice on how to do it.

Dwight Eisenhower:
Many can argue "Why him?", but I'd say Ike has a reason for this. Managed to keep the Western Allies working together (which wasn't an easy task) and in the classic Roman Style was also a great politician and president. (Yep, Generals need to be politicians too, sometimes) If Germans were brilliant tacticians, Americans were better strategists. After all, the US Armed Forces is one of the great armies of history.
