Roman Roads as a Subway Map

Post by de officiis »

statistics student turns the roman empire's ancient roads into a subway map
as the saying goes, all roads lead to rome — but it’s not that easy to imagine the actual scope and size of the romans’ vast empire and its intricate interconnectivity. sasha trubetskoy — a statistics major at the university of chicago and self-described ‘geography and data nerd’ — has undertaken the task of condensing the immense network into a graphic that can be easily and quickly understood. after weeks of research across a range of historical sources, trubetskoy designed a subway-style map of the major roman roads, based on the empire of CA. 125 AD.

This should be your next minecraft project. Roman Roads, Moscow Subway, or French Catacombs. It would be trickier doing subterranean screen shots, but if anyone can minecraft that shit, its you and your son.

Maybe he could make an Appian Way connecting his Roman city to the Greek and Babylonian one, assuming they were built in the same map. Would be a hell of a project. He could even make some small Roman towns based on the surviving archaeology in between the major sites.
