So, what do you consider to be mankind's greatest invention?

IMHO, I would list both fire and duct tape as the greatest invention.

Fire wasn't so much an invention as an application... essentially the domestication of the chemistry of combustion.

Whatever it was it was one of the keys to man becoming the dominant species on the planet.

The other is the capacity to transmit culture... through symbolic language and story telling... certainly calling language and story telling inventions would be a stretch.
