That's a serious question.
The cutoff is a bit arbitrary but will do for an approximation. The primary reason is bc it put the author before the perversion of desconstruction/post modernism drivel. Not that everything after that decade was or is awful just that its decent place to start looking backward.

No he didn't. LOTR was being published in second or third edition by 53 and it was apparently completed by 49 according to wiki. I still remember reading my paper back trilogy and it was published in 53 or 55.

1923 would be a good place to start since all works published in the United States before 1923 are in the public domain.

Circa 1950 b/c I didn't want to have an exact year date as the proverbial "cutoff".
