I continue to believe that we need to address the root causes of violence. In this case, it looks like a defensive reaction to perceived threats.

Btw, the bolded part? That doesn't match up with the optimistic nihilism from the video. That's anything goes. What you said there is not.
Do whatever feels good is exactly hedonism. You're advocating, not that people take off a security blanket of dogma, but rather put one on: feels good? DO IT. Who gives shit what the effect on everyone else is?
I'm not advocating hedonism, and this entire discussion seems to be derailed by several of you extrapolating that from an objective view of the universe. Nihilism simply means that there's no 'overriding purpose' to life. There is no boogyman in the sky judging you, and you have only yourself to answer to. If you choose to take that off into Candyland, and rape/loot/steal at will, then you'll pay consequences in a society. That's life, and that's your choice. Removing the blinders of dogma does not make you free of reality.

And.. I'm trying not to leap to conclusions here, but are you guys actually advocating that this view should be suppressed for "The Greater Good"? And then pointing at it as a possible cause for totalitarianism?

Yes.

Aren't all the biggest monsters in history high IQ?

Didn't they think the old rules didn't apply to them?

The "knew better." They "meant good". They were so smart and rational.
Ya know what solves a bunch of those problems: a little dose of hedonism and nihilism. Knocks the Utopian, 'let's make a better world for everybody' bullshit right out of you. ;)

I am really enjoying how heady this conflict over public art has made my forum mates. We're really all digging down to the root of language, truth, logic, and whatnot on account of the lost cause.

God bless America and open discourse, right guys!

Right?

So your point is, what, there's just no 'overriding purpose' to life and you only answer to yourself? To answer to yourself means, whatever you, internally believe, is your guiding principles, correct? How is that not self-indulgence, and thus, hedonism?

And take this to an end - there is no 'overriding purpose' to life. So why should anyone be worried about the mores and rules of society? They don't matter in the end. If you go your Candyland route, so what if, after your bender of rape and murder, society deems you a complete, hopeless menace you get the needle. If you truly buy into nihilism, so fucking what? You die. Was gonna happen anyway. The victims? They have 'justice' served with your death, but now lay in an emotional wasteland, breeding the same contempt for others that was shown to them.

Do you want nihilism for all? Or just for a few who are 'smart enough' to 'live within the reality of a society' (that doesn't matter)?

And I don't think any of us are advocating for a totalitarian suppression of this idea. It's advocating of the realization of the individual that they must personally face the suffering that exists (the bitter end) in order to make the meaning out of the world. You'll never eradicate nihilism, but you can 'vaccinate' someone against it.

Simplistically getting all 'space boogeyman' about it isn't giving it a fair shake - it's more than saying God exists or doesn't exist. God is the mythologization of the ideal, he way to seek purpose. Stop worrying about the ultimate destination; but instead worry about the direction the ideal of the divine points you in.

You best figure out what your purpose is in life or you risk dying at the end of a mislived life.

But it's not mislived, maaaan. Cause it, like, totally doesn't, like, matter when you get all cosmic about it n' stuff. :ugeek: :obscene-smokingweed:

Nihilism is a dangerous, zero-responsibility mindset.

Since you are frequently sarcastic and obtuse, I honestly cannot figure out what your point ism, especially when you go with the open discourse sarcasm at the end.

Is it just me, or is HM's post indecipherable?

The problem with typed conversations is that there is no tone... or, rather, that it exists more in the mind of the reader than the typist.

Nothing I wrote was meant to be at all sarcastic.

The main point about moral monsters is that (and this is pretty much a statement form the chair, but a safe bet) folks don't typically set up genocidal regimes on account of a deficit of purpose and moral certainty. Or a surfeit of personal pleasure seeking, for that matter.

The rest of my post: I genuinely am enjoying reading this conversation, and am genuinely appreciative of the free speech zone which has allowed it.

God bless America is just a term of art for said appreciation.
