Who Does The Walmart's Existence Serve?

Post by Fife »

Would you all rather that we give incentives to large shareholders to reinvest in capital growth? Or to stick profits in unproductive assets? Or give no incentives at all?

Or would you rather that we just outlaw the Walmart?

Who has Walmart shareholders’ wealth?
Who has the wealth of wealthy stockholders?

The question seems absurd: the stockholders have it, of course.

But I’m not asking who owns the stock; I’m asking who has the wealth? There is a difference. And the difference matters because many good people condemn the free market system on the mistaken belief that the wealth of the wealthy benefits only the wealthy.

. . .

In this important sense, Walmart’s employees and customers have the shareholders’ wealth. They are the ones who use it. The shareholders’ wealth provides tools and equipment that make the employees more productive and therefore higher paid (defending that claim must wait for another post), and it provides goods and services at low prices to customers. Their wealth serves others, not themselves.

Leave Walmart alone. They always have shade tree parking and I never get harassed on their property.

We'll put you down for the central planning / state ownership option. Big shocker, there.

No more free parking at the Walmart, Duke, sorry.

Walmart is amazing. They have fully air conditioned stores playing up to date music and well lit aisles.

I'd be just fine with no government giveaways to megacorps. I'll spend my money where I please, thanks.

Do you guys think that WalMart, its pricing model, business practices, and expansion are sustainable long term?

I would be devastated if they stopped opening up all these new wal marts.

I would die of heat exhaustion. Literally zero other parking lot owners invest in proper shade trees. I think they do it on purpose and what's more, I suspect it's because they are owned by chinamen that have a superstition regarding trees and chop them down. Or they just don't want to encourage vagrancy. Either way, I'm indebted to Walmart for their hospitality and I would gladly fight for them on the front lines wherever it be.
