I just watched Hamburger Hill for the first time.
Apparently, war is hell.
Otherwise known as Hill 937 at Dong Ap Bia.
The High Watermark of the New Dealers.
Not a great Vietnam movie.
Not compared with Full Metal Jacket or Platoon.
True, they turned it into an action movie, so it's a frivolous attempt to document the battle.
Mind you, Platoon and FMH are totally made up fiction, whereas the events in the Hamburger Hill movie actually happened, it's not generally inaccurate, it's just badly made.
The American war plays out between two Hills
The Chu Pong Massif in the Ia Drang Valley and Hill 937 in the A Shau Valley.
Hill 937 is the straw that breaks the camels back, the point where the morale of the Army in the field collapses.
From there moving into 1970 is where it starts to become like a mutiny, the troops start to buck the rider

As a movie it was just a bit dull. Full of cliches about racial division and the pointlessness of war. I'd have rather watched a documentary about the battle than that.
Not a lot of truth in Apocalypse Now but at least it was entertaining.

Yeah, it gets silly at the end too, it's so over the top maudlin that it becomes laughable.
