The Great Henham Steam Rally

So, it's the local steam rally this weekend and I managed to get a free ticket by helping Farmer Paul with a bit of exhibition threshing.

At the farm, we usually thresh with an old Feild Marshall like the green tractor behind the Titan.

The main difference is how quiet the steam engine is compared to the old single-cylinder diesel in the Marshall.

A lovely collection of old tractors were on display. I thought of you Carlus as I wandered around taking pics.

A nice old David Brown was one of my favourites. David Brown went on to buy Aston Martin and Lagonda after the war (1947) and the famous DB Astons bear his initials. A couple of 1970s David Browns do most of the work here on the farm.


This Titan is from 1914 and was imported from the US during WWI to help increase productivity during the blockade. Still working after over 100 years.


Row after row of old tractors, some immaculately turned out like this old Massey Fergusson International...


...some a little less so like the old Fordsons behind the Feild Marshall here.


The Oliver here was marketed as suitable for smallholdings and came with a full range of attachments.


Another pretty little David Brown.


We've got an old Fordson Major similar to the blue tractor here on the farm but it hasn't been used for a few years. A couple of old ''grey Fergies'' behind it.

Back to steam power.

The most ornate were the fairground engines.


Others were working trucks, traction engines and steam rollers.


The Foden lorries were pretty.



My favourite was probably the old bus.


This saw machine was from Milwaukee



This old diesel beast was from 1917...

...and pulled a Howitzer

Then there were the vintage cars. This old 1931 Bentley was my favourite.



Closely followed by the Lagonda.


Three wheeled Morgan sports car


One of only 3 surviving Austin radio cars from WWII, the only one left in RAF colours.


A few old Willys Jeeps.


Jeep in use by French Army until 1990.


Lovely old Albion truck.

What could possibly go wrong?

They were all driving about to and from the show ring.
The steam engines were so quiet you didn't hear them until they were right behind you.
I was a little surprised at how many moving vehicles there were with kids and adults walking amongst them.

In the 19th century steam engine explosions were a fairly regular catastrophe. Not a great way to go.

Plenty of two-wheeled vehicles too. Mostly old British bikes but a few classic Japs as well. Didn't spot any Indians or Harleys.

They are much more regulated these days. Boilers are pressure tested regularly. You can't even fire one up without all the right certificates to prove they are in safe working condition.
There wasn't a single one there not running.
