I suspect the British Army has the same basic allegiance as the US Army -- to the masters of the vidya games and the Class 6 store.

Who they take their orders from means everything.
Parliament out-ranks Her Majesty.
It was rumoured that the Queen was against the war in Iraq. Our troops still went.
This is now a circular argument.
Their commander in chief is who sits at the top of the chain of command. That, ultimately, is who they take their orders from.
Strangely, it seems that the commander and chief is the same person they swear an oath of fealty to..

You are arguing a theoretical point, I am pointing out what actually happens in practice.Speaker to Animals wrote: Wed Sep 04, 2019 3:59 pmMontegriffo wrote: Wed Sep 04, 2019 3:48 pmWho issues them their orders?

This is doomed to go around in circles until Capps comes along and declares it spam.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

You are claiming that, if Parliament decided to defy the Queen's prerogative to shut that shit show down and start over, that the armed forces will violate their oaths and take up arms against their commander in chief.
Seems less than plausible (like my English understatement?

No. I'm saying that Parliament tells the Queen what to do not the other way round...over and over again.Speaker to Animals wrote: Wed Sep 04, 2019 4:08 pmIt's not theoretical at all.Montegriffo wrote: Wed Sep 04, 2019 4:05 pmYou are arguing a theoretical point, I am pointing out what actually happens in practice.Speaker to Animals wrote: Wed Sep 04, 2019 3:59 pm

It is a constitutional monarchy, not an absolute monarchy.

The Crown is the nation. Those who swear an oath to her swore no oath to parliament. Parliament serves at the Queen's leisure, not the other way around. The parliament does not tell the Queen what to do, the Queen tells the parliament what to do, she just chooses to let them run shit the way they see fit most of the time. The Queen is the Commander-in-Chief, not the PM, not Parliament.Montegriffo wrote: Wed Sep 04, 2019 3:15 pm The queen has no power to deploy troops. That power lies with Parliament.
She is a non-political figurehead.
The oath is to the Crown which in practice means the nation.
You may wish that you lived in a Republic, but you do not. Parliament may be supreme as long as the Crown says they are, but they are not the sovereign, the Crown is.

Cromwell settled this a long time ago.
We live in a representative democracy. Power resides in Parliament.
I can't believe that this even needs saying.

And then the crown settled Cromwell.

Cromwell's republic was overthrown, he settled fuck all. Power resides in parliament when the Monarch says it does, the representatives swear an oath to the Crown as well. All power flows from the monarch, that is a fact, just because the crown wisely gives parliament wide latitude to run things on the monarch's behalf doesn't mean that parliament have the power and the Crown is just a mere figurehead with no power.Montegriffo wrote: Thu Sep 05, 2019 1:15 am Cromwell settled this a long time ago.

The Crown is more popular than parliament as well, that's a fact. The people have never turned against a non-Catholic monarch, assuming people would side with parliament over the House of Windsor is naive.
