LeMay checks all the boxes.

He led into battle from the front, in a bomber, which was much more dangerous than being an army General.

He personally directed sweeping changes in a war which were arguably war winning.

He personally directed the building of and then led the most powerful military force in human history.

That force then kept the peace until this very day.

He had the resolve to do what had to be done, even when the ignorant masses were decrying him as a villain.

What more do you want from a General?

He wasn't the monster the Hollywood Liberal Panty Waists have made him out to be.

In fact, he was very considerate, deliberative, and mild mannered.

His sortie metrics literally were the number of civilians burned to death. But okay. Other than that, he was a huge softy.

He simply did the math, more enemy killed, less American, war is won sooner, less of everybody killed overall on both sides.

You don't win wars by playing nice.

The Humanitarian Pixie Dust war was simply becoming a stalemate, breaking the stalemate to end the war sooner was the actually more humane option.

Peace Through Strength is far more productive than Humanitarian Pixie Dust. HPD is counter-productive to winning wars, and saving lives during a war. Ending the war sooner is far more humane indeed, but those snorting the humanitarian pixie dust never seem to pick up on that.

And while LeMay was big government in terms of national security, in all other respects he was a limited government rigtht wing nutjob

Vinegar Joe has to rank amongst the worse.
Spent most of his time bitching about his allies and cared nothing for his men.
Had seriously ill men sent back to the front to fight with dysentery, malaria and all sorts of tropical diseases.
Troops were actually cutting the seats out of their pants so they could keep firing while they were emptying their bowels.
Nasty piece of shit who called his own black troops niggers and his Chinese allies gooks.
Used the Marauders when they were a spent force in serious need of rest. His own men fantasised about shooting him and blaming Jap snipers.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.
