What about Riptide? Anybody remember that show? With the Screaming Mimi S-58?

That was like an NBC Magnum PI clone

Magnum P.I. was the apex of the genre as far as I can tell.

Rockford was great, but Magnum took it to another level, Rockford more of a pure detective show, Magnum adding paramilitary adventure. The military aspect of Magnum was the big draw for me.

It had this confluence of the detective genre, the military stuff, and then all the paranormal/psychic things. It was truly unique.

And the quartet of characters, Magnum and Higgins, Rick and TC, it was like hanging out with your buddies thursday nights at 9. The guest house at the Robin Masters Estate was like a home away from home.

And they stuck the landing. Magnum reenlists, didn't see it coming, but it was perfect.
