I don't. The after-effects of the decision don't make the decision wrong.Kath wrote:I agree with Okee on this specific case. I'm okay with not actively helping the feds but am completely against them hindering work in progress by the feds.
You can't seriously support an unlimited number of people coming here against our wishesGrumpyCatFace wrote:I don't. The decision to allow a career criminal to remain here illegally. That's the decision you say isn't wrong. It isn't wrong to circumvent American sovereignty and allow a criminal to stay here, even if the consequence is he goes on to kill an American.GrumpyCatFace wrote:I don't. I don't support that either. But since the guy had already walked over the damn border 5 times, does it make more sense to put him back over the same border, or transfer him somewhere to be prosecuted and put in jail for a crime?Kath wrote:You can't seriously support an unlimited number of people coming here against our wishesGrumpyCatFace wrote:I don't. Sure, if you keep commiting crimes, we should just let you continue. derp
It also makes sense that the DA in that other jurisdiction wouldn't want to prosecute an ancient, minor offense.
Both parties made more-or-less reasonable decisions, but in this one, weird case, the guy ended up walking, and then killed someone. That sucks, but it wasn't the result of any gross negligence, or gaping holes in the law. We have some areas openly opposing deportation of illegals. That needs to be worked out. In the meantime, weird shit will happen like this. But pretending, as we are, that some large number of illegals are prone to committing murder is ridiculous. Doesn't even meet the bar of a valid opinion. Before his arrest, Lopez-Sanchez had been convicted of seven felonies and been deported five times.
He was a "career criminal" in the sense that he broke the laws multiple times - apparently, only rather minor ones.
In the same sense that any pothead, or commuter is a 'career criminal'.Before his arrest, Lopez-Sanchez had been convicted of seven felonies and been deported five times.
I speed every fucking day on the way to work. Before his arrest, Lopez-Sanchez had been convicted of seven felonies and been deported five times.
The after-effects do not change the validity of the decision that was made.
And fuck you too. Should we go zero-tolerance on all minor offenses, lest someone commit a more serious one later?

Meh... you're being naive. He was sent back specifically because there was already a wink/nod policy that SF would not be prosecuting. This was collusion to deny the feds the opportunity to do their job.GrumpyCatFace wrote: I don't support that either. I'm not down for that. That's accomplice-like behavior.
Again, I have absolutely no issues with not actively helping. Colluding against them, though? Nah, fuck that noise.

You saw that in the same movie I saw it in.de officiis wrote:My older brother helps transport these people back to wherever they come from--usually places like Guatamala, El Salvador, Nicaragua. He says some of them deliberately get caught before the holidays so they can go home free to visit their families.
