Good Historical Films

Post by heydaralon »

I believe there was a thread on good historical tv shows somewhere on here. I made one for historical movies that I enjoy (even if they are not 100% accurate or even close). Some of these are silly, but many of them are quite good:

1. Last of the Mohicans
2.The Last Valley (1971) a film on the 30 years war with Michael Caine. Written and directed by James Clavell (the shogun author)
3. Gangs of New York (2002): Fucking awesome movie.
4. Flesh and Blood 1985: A great Rutger Hauer absurd fest directed by Starship Troopers Paul Verehoven
5. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (beautifully shot film, beautifully written, probably my favorite of all time to be honest)
6. Amadeus
7.Kingdom of Heaven. Biased and not historically accurate, but the directors cut is the one to watch. The theatrical cut really fucked up the narrative and character development. The director's cuts for Ridley Scott's films are always amazing.
8. Black Robe. About Jesuit Priests in Canada dealing with Savages. Just saw it the other day
9. Come and See 1985. Just plain weird and depressing, but a great fictionalized film on the Eastern Front
10. Braveheart. Great battle scenes, I know you folks have all seen that one.
11.Downfall. That youtube Hitler yelling meme came from a scene in this film, which was about Hitler's last days in the Berlin bunker. Really great depiction of Hitler and Goebbels imo
12. Gandhi 1982. Great movie about an evil guy
13. Patton 1970. I've heard George C Scott was not anything like Patton in speech looks or behavior, but he is great in this film. A classic.
14. Letters from Iwo Jima
15. Nixon 1995. Oliver Stone is a nutjob, but this film is among my favorites of the 1990s. Great depiction of Nixon
16. Seven Years in Tibet. Awesome movie about the Dalai Lama and the Chinese communist invasion of Tibet.
17. Empire of the Sun 1987. JG Ballard being captured by the Japanese in Shanghai during WW2 and put into a prisoner camp with other british citizens. Very good. Great book/author in general
18. Battleship Potemkin. Commie Propaganda, but has influenced many subsequent filmmakers, and many films have paid homage to Eisenstein's techniques (The Untouchables 1987 with the train station shoot out and baby carriage falling down the stairs is giving a direct nod to Potemkin for instance)
19. Kun Dun 1997 Another Dalai Lama film with some really cool shots of Tibetan Sand art and those bad ass prayer horns they use
20. Munich. 2005. A bit preachy, but a great film with all sorts of insane action sequences. Based on George Jonas' Vengeance book.
21. The Bridge over the River Kwai
22. The Battle of Algiers

These are the ones I have enjoyed and can think of off the top of my head. If you folks have any recommendations that aren't on this list, I'd love to hear them!

Love the Man who would be king. Believe it or not, I'm not a big Lawrence of Arabia fan.

Apocalypto

When you get on this subject the boo birds come out nitpicking Historical Accuracy. I don't have a problem with pointing out historical face palms in films; like the Battle of Stirling Bridge...……. but there's no Fucking Bridge. However, I have problem with snooty people who claim they can't enjoy historically inaccurate films, and by god you shouldn't either.

I love Battle of the Bulge with Hank Fonda, Telle Savalas and Charles Bronson, its historical awful, but I love the flick.
