Anyone into warhammer 40k? I've been listening to a podcast about it and it sounds absolutely fascinating. The lore is. I don't know how to go about playing it but I kind of want to paint some little plastic space marines now.

Warhammer is a very, very, expensive hobby. It also takes a lot of time. For a decent 1500-2000pt 40k army you must expect to pay at least around $500. On top of that, you will need rules books, paint, brushes, tools, terrain etc.

Plenty of people start but grow tired of it or can't find the time so there is probably a lot you can pick up second hand.

If you just want to get into the lore, the novels are pretty good, in a pulpy kind of way. Start with The Space Wolf Omnibus by William King.

Lead in miniatures has been banned since 1993. They use lead-free pewter now. You can lick them if you want to.

Better and more affordable to get into D&D or Pathfinder, honestly.

You can incorporate miniatures into those without breaking the bank.

That level of detail is fine and good for painting competition, exhibition pieces or perhaps the leader of an army. You will never get the army ready if you aim for that level. In miniature gaming the old saying, perfect is the enemy of good, is truly valid. Learn to paint fast so you can get to playing.

Here are some tricks. Paint more than one miniature at the same time. You can do a squad in one evening. Do one color at a time. The paint on the first one will be dry when you finish the last and you can go to the next layer without waiting.



For special characters, it can be fun to go into more detail but that takes time. Save those for last and see if you still have the motivation.

A previous GF had a couple of boys so I thought it would be great to leave my table tennis table in her huge kitchen dining room extension so I could get a few games in when I went around to see her.
Trouble was, every time I visited the table was completely covered in Warhammer figures which could not be moved.

Warhammer is a Gen X game. These kids might be exceptional specimens of that otherwise retarded and dysfunctional generation.

I could only afford the Dawn of War PC games in my youth, but I loved those Warhammer games. Never had the table space or resources to sink into the miniatures tho. Did a little Battletexh instead ... since one or two mech miniatures is infinitely more affordable than seventy bajillion space elves.

Yeah, I would love to play, but when I had the money I lacked the time, and now that I have the time I lack the money.
