Tearing Down Twain?

Deeply disturbing either way, that the accusations may be true, or that great historical figures are being targeted.

Damnit. Not Twain.
In 1905, when seventy-year-old Mark Twain began to collect a bevy of adolescent girls, whom he called his “angel-fish,” he defended his predilection by insisting that he longed for grandchildren. His own daughters were grown—his favorite, Susy, was dead by then—and he was lonely. But grandfathers can have grandsons as well as granddaughters, and Twain, the creator of one of literature’s most famous adolescents, surely celebrated boys’ cheeky energy. There was more, then, to his strange sorority than an elderly man’s yearning for grandchildren, more even than nostalgia for his daughters’ childhoods. “As for me,” Twain wrote at the age of seventy-three, “I collect pets: young girls—girls from ten to sixteen years old; girls who are pretty and sweet and naive and innocent—dear young creatures to whom life is a perfect joy and to whom it has brought no wounds, no bitterness, and few tears.”

Altamirano: No, Señor Hontar. Thus have we made the world... thus have I made it.

Then get back to me about a Twain discussion. (directed anyone that blogs about a man they know nothing about)

I read his abridged autobiography back in the 90s and still want to get the 3 volume set.

I had never seen reference to these letters before, that’s why I was so taken aback. He’s probably my favorite author.

He liked being around nice girls that liked him. So what? He was about 80 and heartbroken. It brought him some joy to be around sweet people. He lived in a house full of women his entire adult life. I'd think he likes the company of women. And who doesn't but maybe he liked it more than most and women liked being around him and so did kids. We will never know if any of those relationships in the early 1900s were inappropriate or sinister. It was a hundred years ago. People will speculate and prattle. Why even bother?

I agree, that’s how I had always interpreted that period of his life. In the midst of all that tragedy, he looked to the familiar.

My concern is that, if those quotes are accurate they can easily be weaponized. For some, he has always been a figure that they’d like to see knocked down.

But as you said, present day agendas are increasingly replacing the humility required to evaluate the past in its context.

The "progressives" over the past ten years or so have steadily ramping up their vitriol for anything old, traditional, or white. Yes, it really had its roots in the counter culture movement of the 1960s then a cooling off in the 1980s and had another bump in momentum in the 1990s ( "multiculturalism and affirmative action and political correctness) then a decline now its on again. I think broader cultural issues are at play if making things like this article you referenced and other historical "wrongness" known and propagated. Social Media, the Internet in general, and other technological changes have made it a perfect storm to whip up outrage and victimhood. Western Civilization is the problem to them. There is no "cannon" in literature or history that should be valued above the rest or celebrated or thought of as good, advanced, or beautiful. This is classic Communism really. They want new men and new women to march forward into the great utopian equality where nothing from the past matters.

The problem (if you want to see it that way) is that most of white America don't see all history as shit and most still want to honor people, places, and achievements etc. from the past. I think the hysteria will die down again like it did in the 80s and early 2000s , but who knows maybe a real hinge moment in cultural understanding / politics will occur before a cooling down can happen. And even if it does simmer down without much violence or poltical turmoil in the not so distant future whose to say it won't comeback again with even more angst and division.
