Fealty to the state and "anti-piracy" of Muh Ideas is some of the most aggressive and unrelenting programming they push on otherwise intelligent people.
Another quick-n-dirty concept: When you think of IP, imagine a big pile of books being burned.

First tell me how one can "pirate ideas".
Listen to a great song you hear on the radio by an insignificant songwriter and then imitate it and tell people that it's your song and the person on the radio stole it from you.
Then get a famous promoter to promote you and make millions of dollars selling a competing CD and promotional tour.... completely derailing the insignificant songwriter.

Damn. If only somebody had thought of that in the two thousand plus years of western civilization before copyrights were invented in the American revolution. Imagine if Antonio Salieri could have just waited for Wolfgang Mozart to pass out in a drug binge and then stole Mozart's notations to take credit for the Magic Flute.

IP is graft. Pure and simple.
Trade secret laws are the way to go.

Elaborate
The recipe to make Coca Cola is a trade secret . Actually, a lot of production code in American industry is covered by trade secret laws. If an engineer makes copies of source code a d gives it to a competitor, they are going after him under trade secret laws.

Legal enforcement of trade secrets through contract and tort law seems fine to me.
Someone in contractual privity (employee, independent contractor, etc) violates the contract and misappropriates a trade secret? Get an injunction and damages. Rock on.
Anyone commits a tort (conversion, civil conspiracy with a party in privity, fraud, etc) to swipe a trade secret? Get an injunction and damages. Rock on.
Trade secrets protected. No legislation needed. No state favors needed. No administrative bureaucracy needed. No rent-seeking mechanism for patent trolls needed.

It's all social engineering of one stripe or another.
None of us are going to become totally free of social institutions any time soon.
But it's totally worth analyzing the trade offs.
So Socialism in a submissive role relative to Capitalism... it's complicated... but it's here to stay.

This podcast continues to rock...
I'm on 10.24 - The Union of Struggle for the Emancipation of the Working Class
He has set up the history of Czarist Rule in Russia all the way to the coronation of Nicholas II...
He has introduced the late industrialization of Russia under state control...
And the propagation of Revolutionary ideas... contrasting "Narodism" - featuring the peasants as the active agents of revolution with Marxism - focussing on the working class.
He has introduced Lenin, and Martov...
Setting the stage for the major events of the formal "Russian Revolution"... all this in 24 half hour episodes so far...
If you have the patience for it... you are going to get an education.
If you are really interested in the roots of "cultural Marxism" - time to get schooled.
