A "gay conversion" counsellor who founded one of America's largest "therapy" programmes has come out as gay, calling his former practice "harmful".

McKrae Game, 51, is the former leader of Hope for Wholeness and spent 20 years promising to give clients “freedom from homosexuality”.

The practice, designed to suppress or change a person's sexuality, is widely discredited and outlawed in 18 American states.

Mr Game admitted that former clients attempted suicide for telling them they were "doomed". But now he has come out as gay and admitted therapy doesn't work.

He told The Post and Courier newspaper: "Conversion therapy is not just a lie, but it’s very harmful because it’s false advertising.”

Mr Game also said he was a "religious zealot" who hurt people, adding: "People said they attempted suicide over me and the things I said to them.

He said: "I WAS WRONG. Please forgive me. I certainly regret where I caused harm. I know that creating the organisation that still lives was in a large way causing harm. Creating a catchy slogan that put out a very misleading idea of 'Freedom from homosexuality through Jesus Christ' was definitely harmful.
