President Trump on Tuesday signed a bill authorizing funding for NASA while setting a new goal to send humans to Mars.

The president signed the bill in the Oval Office flanked by authors and sponsors of the bill, including Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.)

The law, known as the NASA Transition Authorization Act, gives the space agency $19.5 billion in funding for fiscal year 2018. It also asks the agency to create a plan to send a “crewed mission to Mars in the 2030s.”

Lawmakers also require NASA to create ways to "extend human presence, including potential human habitation on another celestial body and a thriving space economy in the 21st Century.”
NASA is receiving slightly more money than Trump requested in his 2018 budget blueprint. It included $19.1 billion for the agency, which would have been a modest funding cut.

That had to have been Gingrich behind the scenes.

Frankly, I'd rather put efforts into a Lunar Colony or Asteroid Mining.

Does anyone know when Dems lost their interest in Space exploration and why?

Yes. It was a while ago when it was decided our goals should be equality of all people before going to space.

It's a line of discussion I heard recently. I would have to look into it more. It's probably as good a reason as any but I'm hesitant to ascribe any positive attributes regarding republican efforts with space exploration.

I did my We-Need-To-Explore-Space pitch to some Dem Millennials the other day, and they were like, "no." I knew the Black component of the Party was anti-NASA but these were White, college educated. (No engineers though. Not a lot of Dem engineers.)

That's part of it, though. This is what Gingrich has been trying to make happen. I really, really hope Trump can be convinced to put Gingrich in charge of the space program. People who don't know anything about the guy might laugh, but he is the perfect administrator for it and has the right ideas for space policy.

White and Asian men seem to be for Trump.

There are hardly any female engineers, really. Even fewer blacks and hispanics. I mean.. I knew a few Puerto Rican software engineers, but I doubt they liked the idea of millions of Mexicans illegally invading their country.
