I recently watched Frontrunner, the story of the failed 1988 Gary Hart campaign.
Not a great movie, but a good period piece and I think most that grew up in those times would get some enjoyment out of it.
I felt the script and production were good, but the film failed in casting. Hugh Jackman wasn't the right guy, and that's just a start. Donna Rice was miscast, as well as a number of key players.
What I picked up on now, that I missed as the story was breaking was that Gary Hart was a huge DC insider favorite to win in 88. DC wanted the Reagan legacy to die and send GHW Bush home. The story was broke by the Miami Herald, and the Beltway press actually went after the Miami Herald hard for the story. There's a clip of Ted Koppel berating the editor of the Miami Herald about lack of professionalism for running the story.
In hindsite it seemed to me that the Washington Press corps largely knew about Hart's philandering and were ready to treat him like JFK. That was the best part for me.
