So let me get this straight. Spending time traveling in a medieval world Is boring, though clearly people involved in big doings spent a lot of time traveling. And when somehow Gendry gets to the wall, sends a crow and Dany comes in with the Air Force in a seeming matter of hours people bitch too. Uh, huh. Literature, film & TV is filled with travel stories, for most of human history it was the definition of adventure. The Odyssey, Gilgamesh, Huck Finn. There was Wagon Train on TV, and Star Trek was literally pitched as "Wagon Train to the Stars".
I have certainly seen things where I didn't care when characters were endangered, because too little time had been spent making me care about them. Last weeks episode of Discovery was like that, they tried to develop this weird robot character that had been on the bridge into a full fledged member of the gang that we cared about before killing her off in just one episode. Didn't work for me.

It’s in my top 5 all time. Absolutely love it.heydaralon wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 2:05 pmYou check out Billions? Its pretty decent. A bit too Sorkinesque for my tastes, but worth watching.StCapps wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 1:56 pmLulzheydaralon wrote: Thu Mar 28, 2019 1:54 pm Game of Thrones is by far the best show set in Westeros, period. It is way better than all the halfassed spinoffs they'll make. All the complainers can fuck off. I'm tired of explaining to haters that the zombie dragon had an especially powerful flame which could destroy that big wall in 4 seconds. If you can't handle the physics of that, you might as well be a climate change denier.
Game of Thrones is the best non-sci fi fantasy show I've ever seen, even with it's flaws, there are not a lot of good offerings in that genre, and GoT blows them out of the water. I expected the spinoffs to be half assed milking of a cash cow, that's already been milked too much as it is.

You just publicly admitted to watching Discovery.brewster wrote: Fri Mar 29, 2019 8:42 am So let me get this straight. Yeah. I'm that desperate for TV SF. It's pretty bad. It broke all my rules about no time travel, amnesia, evil twins and multiple personalities immediately. I doubt there'll be another season.

This makes no sense. With the exception of b-day party in the Shire, the hotel where they meet Strider, Elnrond & the Lothloren, everything else was on-the-road travel. Leaving out everything else in the trilogy would have made this story better for you? I call BS on that. It would have been a 90 minute movie, max, where absolutely nothing of interest happens.StCapps wrote: Fri Mar 29, 2019 3:56 am When things happened at specific locations, those were the most interesting parts, travelling between those points were the most boring parts.
I guess you could include the scene where they throw the ring into the lava pit, but that was a few minutes in one location. They were in/out of there, quick, meaning it was travel. The journey TO Mount Doom was what made the story dramatic.
Methinks you are too rigid in your criteria of what makes a good story.

Those Lord of the Rings movies were gay as fuck too. You have bad tastes if you spent 9 hours watching a bunch of orcs buttfucking eachother in a mud pit, with the pedophile tree carrying the hobbits through the woods. You should watch the Wire.Kath wrote: Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:26 pmThis makes no sense. There are plenty of other times where they get to a location that isn't the final destination, and important stuff happens. Nothing of massive import happens when they are just talking on the road, a little character development here and there, but when the best character development is happening, it's not just talking with other characters on the road. You just like walking and talking way too much Kath, that's your problem. The existence of some scenes that you like being walking and talking does not mean either LOTR or Game of Thrones nailed the balance right on that stuff, both run way too long, and have too much walk and talk filler.Kath wrote: Fri Mar 29, 2019 12:26 pmThis makes no sense. Not sure what you are on about. The entire trilogy is about travelling from point A to point B and back to point A, to accomplish a goal.StCapps wrote: Fri Mar 29, 2019 4:33 pm There are plenty of other times where they get to a location that isn't the final destination, and important stuff happens. The fact that they had to literally stop walking to fight a battle or figure out how to open a door and whatnot doesn't mean they weren't still travelling. Travel isn't just walking. If you take a car trip cross country, the entire thing is a travel journey. When you stop to eat, pee or sleep, you are still travelling.
