I was just thinking the same thing ten minutes ago.
U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff all day Monday in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

The American Legion issued a news release Thursday saying according to Flag Code section 7(m), the U.S. flag is to be displayed at half-staff to observe the day. President Donald Trump is expected to sign a proclamation regarding Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Or for firefighters, or for politicians, or soldiers, or just a somber embrace of solidarity for people who have died in shootings/bombings, terrorist attacks in the same country, etc...
