People suddenly questioning US Generals, and rightly so.
I only know one General personally
Brigadier General (retired) Achilles Gregory Young
he is my idol, but not just me, all my close mates in the regiment idolize him
he actually worked his way up through the ranks tho
he joined as a Private Soldier in the 60's and rose to Sergeant Major in the 70's
then he took his commision as a Captain in the 80's
then when we served under him he was Major Young then Lt. Colonel Young
he's the best officer any of us ever knew, hard charger leading from the front
but all the other officers resented him, they used to call him "Frank Burns" to deride him
even tho that is what is the other officers were like, Colonel Young was more like John Rambo
no matter how much shit the officers tried to throw at me, General Young was my protector
on a big exercise, he always used to come find me in the field, where's Smitty at ?
then he'd bum smokes off me and ask me how I thought the exercise was going
he had the entourage of officers around him, they were always wondering; who tf is this Smitty guy ?
last time I saw him, he said, since we're both old men now and retired, just call me Greg
I said, hell no, sir, that ain't gonna happen, you will be "Colonel Young" to us, forever
I remember the first time he ever spoke to me, it was on a company attack, I was manning an LMG
I was just in the prone position waiting for somebody to tell me what to do
suddenly I get kicked in the back of the helmet, hard
I turn around and said what the fuck ?!
and I look up, and there is Major Young standing over me, yelling
"you can't engage effectively with that gun from here, get the fuck up there on the right flank !"
so I got up and started running, and he yells for me to stop, so I stopped and turned around
he says, "what's your name, Private ?"
I says, Smitty, sir !
he says, "right, I got your number, I'm watching you"
I was like, ah fuck, just what I needed, then I ran off to the right flank
In got a photo here above my desk, me & General Young shooting the breeze in the field, good times
