I was about to write trebuchet, but from the looks of those castles flimsy walls I figured a couple of large catapults, like for example mangonels, could probably do the job.Montegriffo wrote:Nobody knows the difference between a catapult and a trebuchet? Re: Castle review thread.
For the most part walls were usually undermined by tunneling or knocked down after a castle was taken.
Trebuchets played a minor role overall. Gunpowder was the castle killer eventually.
After canons became powerful enough to knock down walls it was game over for the medieval castle.

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

For a while though, you got really cool star shaped walls to reduce damage.Montegriffo wrote:For the most part walls were usually undermined by tunneling or knocked down after a castle was taken.

The small ones don't for me either. I can't find an image right now but there are some nice looking ones for larger areas.

Where is that? Looks like Holland or Belgium.Hastur wrote:Can be made to look good.
This is probably the finest castle in the UK, I've not been yet but it is high on my list.

Beaumaris on Angelsey in Wales, the last and largest of Edward I's ring of castles built to subdue the rebellious Welsh. Designed by James of St George from Savoy, one of the greatest architects of the medieval era.

Started in 1295 and not completed when James died in 1309 Edward ran out of money and it remained partially unfinished. Thought impregnable in it's day the concentric design was not tested till the civil war.

I think castles represent neo Nazi values. I look forward to the day when England is progressive enough to finally realize it's the current year and these structures do not represent our society and our heritage.

Why would you think that, when castles pre-date the nation state?Nukedog wrote:I think castles represent neo Nazi values. I look forward to the day when England is progressive enough to finally realize it's the current year and these structures do not represent our society and our heritage.
