I think there were plenty of conspiracies in play in the 1960's, we know about all sorts of them.

I think Watergate changed things.

I believe that the break in at the Watergate was directly linked to a 1960's conspiracy.

Nixon's interference in the peace talks, which was treason, and Nixon being afraid that Hoover had the dirt and the Democrats had gotten a hold of it, and maybe it was in the safe in the Watergate.

I thought he broke in because the Dems were hammering him about Hughes donations. Anderson fucked up one of his campaigns by proving that Hughes gave money to his brother. I thought he wanted to break in to the Dems office to find out who was giving them money. I have even read that Hughes suggested he do so. I have never read any account that directly explains Nixon's motivation, or what he hoped to find. I think it is possible that he was just so paranoid by that point that he overreached.

Nixon cheating to beat the Democrats when he didn't even need to, overly paranoid drunk for the fail.

In 1968 the left was split, no need to cheat, in 1972 he was facing McGovern, no need to cheat on steroids. Silly Nixon.

Yeah he had it locked down. Tragic figure for sure. Its kind of sad, because he was probably one of the smartest men we ever had in office, but he had this inferiority complex, which ultimately was his downfall.

Overly paranoid drunk. Indeed.

But the thing he was most afraid of, was Hoover having passed shit to the Democrats.

It wasn't that he knew what was in the safe, it was; he had to know for sure that it wasn't that, first and foremost.

If you had to guess, what dirt do you think Hoover had on him?

Everything. Nixon was right to fear Hoover, Hoover had something on everybody.

I just don't think Hoover actually passed it to the Democrats, that was paranoia.

Hoover was dead by the time Nixon left office I thought. Even so, had Hoover known they were gonna run McGovern, I cannot see someone with his belief system fucking over a solid Right Wing Hawk like Nixon to help a pussy socialist cock stain like McGovern take the job.

Hoover kept things for Hoover.

Hoover was not out to stage coup de tats.

Hoover was a patriot in his own way.

He knew they were all corrupt, he was just documenting that, but not to screw people.

I think Hoover felt like he was protecting America, Hoover had to know everything, just in case.

Hoover was dead before. Hoover died in 72'

The thing Nixon was afraid of being outed for however, happened in 67', when Hoover was working for Johnson.

Nixon was close with Hoover, Hoover liked Nixon, but Hoover also liked Johnson, so Nixon couldn't be sure.
