What kind of a sap ever prayed for sunny weather?

Or an ace on the river?

Hubris. The devil's playground.

Polytheism can't compete with public sports and mass media. Who needs a thunder god when you have NASCAR? Who needs a fertility goddess when you have Beyonce?
Why would I pray to rednecks turning left for 3 to 4 hours?

Let alone it’s safe to say the Beyonce is a tad out of my league and bank account.

And trust me there’s a poker god. That thief rains benevolence and kills ya with a mere turn of a card.
Religion isn't about praying, it's about finding meaning and order. I heard a guy on the radio saying how doctors and science took over much of what religion covered back in the day. We no longer see the priest about sickness or bad weather. You don't pray to the rednecks behind the wheel any more than you pray to the quarterback of "your" team. But they give order and meaning to some lives like the church did. I 1st understood this when I was 18 and working in a factory, sports gave blue collar people something to talk about that was different from yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that....
Ever think about switching to decaf? I think I can find meaning an order without said sanctimony.

Science needs philosophy and religion needs humility. Too bad they’re in such short supply. :P

Well it would of been a much larger payout if my Aces weren’t cracked in good old 2011. ;)

That's what makes that story beautiful. Who wants to hear any prayer that doesn't start and finish with "give me strength?"

I consider that God looks upon the "gibs, plz and I'll do X" prayers with total contempt.

Worship is about submitting yourself to a higher power. In no universe does this higher power want you to fuck yourselves over. It created you and wants you to do the things and get the fuck off this rock.

SuburbanFarmer wrote: Fri Sep 14, 2018 10:12 am What about the idea that the legend of King Arthur was born from the Saxon Arthur, forced into hiding by the Vikings, and returned triumphant?

The first King of Britain eventually, he had a pretty serious propaganda campaign going while he was run out of town.
It's older. Most likely an amalgamation of stories about different Celtic Briton kings before and during the Anglo Saxon invasion. Artur was first mentioned in the Historia Regum Britanniae written around 1136 by Geoffrey of Monmouth. Geoffrey didn't put a lot of work into listing his sources so there has to be some effort put into figuring out where he got his stories from. Some things are clearly fiction, like wizards and dragons and Britons conquering Iceland and Norway but some of it clearly is taken from older stories.
Here's a good start if you want to learn more. https://www.amberley-books.com/arthur-a ... itain.html

Fuck you, "clearly fiction." Like someone could just up and imagine some badass shit like wizards and dragons.
