I love Apocolypto. Better than Braveheart! Heartbreak Ridge was kind of a let down. Gibson needs to up his game a bit imo.

Oh shit I forgot to add The Killing Fields to my list. Its an 80's film that covers Khmer Rouge and the journalist who ended up in the Bernie Bro Concentration Camp in Cambodia. Really excellent film!

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Possibly the most accurate age of sail film ever made. No fucking exploding cannon balls or cannon bores you can fit a man in like the idiotic Pirates movies. The 2 stars are miscast IMO, but you can't have everything. The ca 2000 TV films of Horatio Hornblower starring Ioan Gruffudd are pretty good too, and lets not forget the whole series of TV movies starring Sean Bean as Richard Sharpe.

Did Gallipoli and Breaker Morant get mentioned? The former is by the same director as M & C, Peter Weir.

Billy Wilder made a lot of great films. Sunset Blvd and the Apartment also come to mind

Have you read the books? They're almost a genre unto themselves.
