Frank Dikotter is an excellent historian. His trilogy covers Maoist rule from the Civil War to the Cultural Revolution. I have only read the second volume on the famine, but I own his other 2 books and they are near the top of my reading list. Essential reading for anyone who wants to see what happens when leftists gain power and control dissent. Also, Jasper Becker's Hungry Ghosts, is another great account of Mao's famine and the destruction of agriculture in China. Good interview.

I found out about Mumford through Wrath of Gnon. I liked a lot of his quotes. I just now saw this post where you linked an interview with him. I'm gonna check this guy out.

Interesting interview. Guy seems like a real expert. With Chinese history both Ancient and Modern I am very much ignorant. Almost willfully blind but I rationalize it with 1) there's only so much history one can learn 2) I prefer Ancient-Medieval European time frames 3) I've learned enough horrible malevolent movements and people.
Actually reading Kotkin's
Stalin volumes will do that to you. Add to things like
Ordinary Men, Man Search for Meaning, and things like A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies , then I think I'm good in the reading of evil and mayhem quota.

That guy is a keeper for sure. He has written bios on the "big three." Stalin, Lenin, and Trotsky. If you get a chance, check out his older collegeague Robert Conquest.
