If the for-profit insurance model cannot contain costs such that sick people can somehow receive health care, then the model doesn't work.

Now, I don't mean unlimited treatment costs here. I am talking about people who have cancer or, in TC's case, epilepsy, and need typical treatment for those things. I think it is obvious that the for-profit insurance model fails at providing those things. If you are going to use for-profit insurance, then you need some form of public option or Medicare for all to deal with for-profit health insurance's failures.

Another argument against for-profit insurance is that the profit incentive results in zero innovation and zero improvement of services. Profit, in the context of health insurance, represents denied services. Many of those denials might be justifiable, but at least some of them could have been picked up had that revenue not been allocated to profit for the insurer. For-profit health insurance does not somehow increase the amount of health care options people have. Insurance issues are separate from the issues of hospitals and doctors. Thus, the primary argument against socialized medicine (state-run hospitals and doctors), that the lack of profit-incentive would drive out businesses in health care, do not really apply here.

We definitely agree that the model in use before and then during Obamacare doesn't work; except for the insurance companies and the legislators they own.

I don't like "for-profit" as a dirty-word. I prefer "theft" as the dirty-word; as in the "theft by insurance and government model."

Profit through voluntary exchange in an open and competitive market isn't theft; and in a real market (not a governmental/socialist market) doctors would bust their asses to take care of people with pre-existing conditions.

TC: How would it feel to be treated as a human customer, and not judged just as a usable or disposable revenue stream.

I didn't say insurance profit is theft. I said for-profit insurance does not actually increase the amount of health care services we have available, and it certainly does not somehow speed up medical innovations. If anything, the profit taken by a health insurer is always going to represent some amount of services denied to people. Those denials might be justifiable, but you cannot deny that, had there been no for-profit model, some of those people would have received treatments that in the for-profit system were denied treatment.

There really is no good argument in favor of for-profit insurance that I have ever seen.

Damn . . . StA should start the first private zero-profit health insurance company.
The one where he puts himself on the hook to cover everyone's potential medical expenses, then disperses any remaining funds back to his policy holders at the end of the year.

It would take an extraordinary amount of work, and the risk would be insane, but clearly that's the answer. Can't have businesses making profits, by jove.

Anybody who wants to get together a constitutional amendment saying that no American government at any level can interfere with or get involved in any way with health care has my vote.

If what we mean by the "for-profit insurance model" is the shit we have now, the as for ending the for-profit insurance model immediately? I'm all for that.

I think everyone with eyes can clearly see the healthcare system has problems.
I think nobody with brains is leaping to the conclusion that the problem lay in businesses making profit.

There's profits, and then there's profiteering rackets. Let's not confuse the two.

 Great comment, genius. We had an interesting discussion before this clown showed up. I guess now we have to argue against a dipshit Sowell book yet again.

The for-profit health insurance model was here long before government got involved. Government got involved and made it worse because the existing model obviously doesn't work.

Given the strength of the source material I'd have to agree.
It was pretty great, as a response to something that was basically "Profits? REEEEEEEEEE!!!"

Why not actually discuss the argument? I really begin to loathe your presence here since you haven't actually made arguments in years. It's just derailing every God damned thread you get into with flame wars and childishness.

Do you have an argument or not?
