Knighthoods for Mo Farrah and Andy Murray as British Olympians take 10% of the honours.

Britain’s sporting elite has been rewarded in a New Year honours list in which Rio Olympic medallists Andy Murray and Mo Farah are made knights and Katherine Grainger and Jessica Ennis-Hill become dames.

Olympians and Paralympians make up 10% of the 2017 list, which also includes knighthoods for Kinks frontman Ray Davies, 72, comedian Ken Dodd, 89, actor Mark Rylance, 56, and a damehood for actor Patricia Routledge, 87.

Murray’s honour caps a remarkable year for the Scot, who claimed a second Wimbledon title, defended his Olympic crown and took the world number one slot from Novak Djokovic in an extraordinary run of form. Aged 29, he is among the youngest to be awarded a knighthood in modern times and had once said he felt too young for such an accolade.

Four-time Olympic gold distance runner Mo Farah, 33, said of his knighthood: “I am so happy to be awarded this incredible honour from the country that has been my home since I moved here at the age of eight. Looking back at the boy who arrived here from Somalia, not speaking any English, I could never have imagined where I would be today – it is a dream come true.”

Also Sir Roger Bannister (first 4 min mile) is made a companion of honour the highest title available.

C'mon man, Sir Roger Bannister's estate got a prize also. Even tho it was pure white privilege that allowed him to run a "4 minute mile."

Knighthood, Sir-hood, whatever state prize, it's all available to the right supplicant.

You know he's still alive don't you? Sir Roger got the award himself not his estate.

Good on him. He lived long enough to not only break an unbreakable record but to also catch a bouquet from the crown. Now his life has meaning.

Well he was knighted 41 years ago so he has had plenty of time to enjoy his achievement. He considers his proudest achievement to be his work in medicine.

Bannister went on to become a distinguished neurologist and Master of Pembroke College, Oxford, before retiring in 1993. When asked whether the 4-minute mile was his proudest achievement, he said he felt prouder of his contribution to academic medicine through research into the responses of the nervous system. Bannister is patron of the MSA Trust.

Also he is 6'2" and well built.....
