What is the real significance of this battle?

Will probably either be, or be capitalized on as, the beginning of the US "losing the Middle East". Bush jr. declared Syria part of the "Axis of Evil" back in his day. Might become part of an axis of neccesary evil under Trump, but recently Turkey and Russia seem to making deals to end fighting without the US even participating, turning the US irrelevant when it comes to Syria. That will probably affect US prestige for some years to come.

The only reason I can think of this being a big deal is the "Someone needs to do something about this!" approach. Since the UN is essentially tits on a bull (Aleppo is an alarm bell: the international system has failed), somebody ought to be stepping in.

This ain't the A Shau Valley, this is the opposite of that, Dong Ap Bia was a feature which could be dug in on, impervious to firepower, and no way to deploy armour up the hill, with only one landing zone for the American helos to come in on, the Russians don't have these problems in Aleppo.

There's a strategic reason why this is not the A Shau as well, at the A Shau, the American chain of command was mindlessly fighting a battle for the "high ground" as if that was the PAVN's centre of gravity in the Central Highlands, when it wasn't, these urban strongholds in Syria however, are in fact the centre of gravity, because there ain't no triple canopy jungle in Syria, and anybody caught in the open, is dead meat.

There are almost no people left in Aleppo, fled or dead that is what an Aleppo is.
