Yangon, Myanmar (formerly, Rangon, Burma) is pretty much a shithole... Literally, open sewers. The men wear skirts & the woman work the fields in sequined dresses. Their woven bamboo huts are built on stilts over flooded fields. Water buffalo live in the guest quarters.
Walking through a slum to get to a zoo entrance is always a bad sign, and it didn't get better but there were a couple positive notes. For one, my wife, Gwynne, who always likes to interact with the animals given a chance, was able to feed the elephants. Plus, the Asiatic Bear was huge, as was one of the tigers, and the crocodile was the largest I've seen in close captivity. There was a horrific sign on the low fence showing a cartoon boy being bitten in half as warning not to enter.There were men fishing in the zoo's shallow cement pond: two throwing a net, and another who had tied hooks to empty soda bottles. A pair of elegant swans swam slowing by, unaffected by their presence but whatever aesthetic value the water feature was intended for had be entirely corrupted. In fact, the whole zoo reeked of abandonment.
