Badminton at the Zoo
My wife, Gwynne, and I, zoo connoisseurs, had visited one zoo in China but we got the opportunity to go to a second in Kunming & we jumped at the chance even though it was rainy. Good thing we did because every zoo has a personality and Kunming's zoo was loud and boisterous, just not with animals. The zoo is located in a park which was filled with old people practicing Tai-chi & various other kinds of martial arts, singing Chinese songs & playing Chinese instruments. Not only that, backgammon & badminton are also very popular. We were already impressed before seeing the first animals.Not to be disappointed, a couple of species of Gibbons we'd never seen before were in the first enclosure, on the way to the “Anti-Japanese War Memorial” and in-park McDonald's. Also a new experience, there were housecats living with the monkeys, and Gwynne got to throw peanuts & steamed bread to them, after yelling "Ho! Ho! Ho!" their facile hands elegantly catching the tasty morsels.The signs included English translations, including the exhortation, "No romping!" Of course, some dipwad on TripAdvisor complained that the animals were mistreated by being forced to perform, but the enclosures were modern, clean and relatively large, and the lions were playing with their cubs. The bull elephant, Zhongbo, certainly wasn't complaining.
