The idea of a Chicken Music Festival in Chicken, Alaska seems problematic at best. The tiny old gold mining community is hours from anywhere up along the “Road at the Top of the World, but the town was a pleasant surprise.

The tradition there is to pull up women’s panties, slash them on either side with a Bowie knife, pull them out from behind, shredding them into pieces then shooting the scraps out of a cannon. The women aren’t warned beforehand that this is going to occur which makes for some embarrassing surprises. My wife, Gwynne, was relieved that we arrived too early to be among the unwitting victims. For my part, I’m sad we missed it; I would have liked to record the look on her face during the incident. I did get a souvenir piece from the tatters of underwear littering the ground. I suggested to Gwynne that she get a pair like that in case there’s a next time?
